Mike Leach Doesn't Think Much of Mangini

Reports surfaced about Micheal Crabtree being a 'diva' after a meeting with the Browns last week leading up the draft, and according to some, those reports caused Crabtree to be sparred the experience of having to play for the Raiders...eerrr...slip to the 10th spot in the Draft.

Mike Leach, Crabtree's college coach, believed that Eric Mangini was the source of such reports, and absolutely blew the Man-Genius up in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News.

The Sporting Blog, earlier today, had Leach's quote on the subject:

“Crabtree as a receiver has been more successful than that guy has been as a coach. ... I think he took it upon himself to figure that in a few minutes he had all the expertise on the subject of Michael Crabtree that he needed. And so we’ll see how those non-divas up there in Cleveland do this year."

The 'he' Leach was referring to was Eric Mangini. And I guess Leach is saying that Crabtree didn't get fired after a second half collapse last season that cost his team a shot at the post season...or something like that.

Cutler Ain't Coming to Cleveland

From Zoner Sports - Cutler is going to Chicago.

And I have this to say...if the Browns would have paid the price the Bears paid for Cutler - (2) 1st rounders, a 3rd rounder and an average QB - Kyle Orton (substitute Derek Anderson) for Cutler and a 5th round pick I would have completely given up on those Clowns. For the time being, I remain on life support as a die-hard Browns fan.

So Who Will Play More Games Next Year: Dante or Joe?

The most professional athlete the new Browns have ever employed since their inception in 1999 is parting ways with the new regime. A regime headed up by the coach the Jets fired this offseason, Eric Mangini, and a I guy I never heard of who Eric picked. Regardless, Joe Jurevicious, who battled injuries, and a staph infect the Browns most likely gave him, last season, will no longer wear his hometown teams colors. Bittersweet for me as a fan. Bitter in that I wont be able to watch Joe at Browns stadium on Sundays - sweet because I am happy for Joe. If I were an NFL player, playing for the Browns is not exactly like working for Google.

So the Browns let Joe go and are left with Dante Stallworth. Josh Sabo and Aaron Goldhammer engaged in an intersting debate on the Really Big Show, yesterday. The question being, who ends up playing more NFL games next season? Dante Stallworth or Joe Jurevicious? Shaver Sports has this debate as our poll question, and JD Shaver is voting for Joe. I also will go as far as setting the over under for Stallworth at (5) and am betting the under. Vote today.

The Need for Greed

A big topic on both the Really Big Show and the Reghi show yesterday was the talk of Shaun Rogers asking the Browns to release him before they pay him his 6 million dollar roster bonus next month. According to Adam Scheffter at NFL.com, there are a couple reasons for Rogers wanting to skip town. Both of them have to do with Eric Mangini not going out of his way to say hello to the big man.

Top Men aren't buying it. The real reason is MONEY. Rogers agreed to come to Cleveland when he found out that the Browns were willing to renegotiate his contract. Last March, the Browns agreed to pay Rogers $42 Million over 6 years, through 2013. In the first 3 years of the contract, Rogers is guaranteed $23 Million. At the time, a great deal. Would Eric Mangini not saying hello really make Big Daddy not want to cash in on another $15 million guaranteed? Probably not. So what are the real reasons?

One, rumors are that Pro-Bowler Albert Haynesworth, the free agent nose tackle from Tennessee, is close to signing a deal for up to $15 million a year. Yes, that's right. $15 million a year. More than double than what he and Rogers made this year. He would be the highest paid Defensive Lineman in the league. Rogers must see that kind of cash out there and want to capitalize on his Pro Bowl season.

And two, the NFL collective bargaining agreement ends at the end of the 2010 season. This brings some uncertainty to free agency and the dollars teams will be able to spend. The threat of Lockout by the Owners is making agents and players approaching their peak earning years very, very nervous. Players are looking to cash in now under the current agreement. Rogers may just be the first in line of players looking to opt out and sign a short term, high guaranteed dollar contract, vs. a long term, high total dollar contract. (notice the Nnamde Asomugha contract. Biggest contract in the NFL. HUGE dollars in the first two years, all guaranteed, with a club option for the third year. If the CBA changes the salary cap structure, the Raiders can opt out of the top contract in the league in year 3)

An interesting note: One of the proposed changes to the CBA is rumored to be a Team's ability to recoup money from players when they do not fulfill their contract. Meaning-when players like Rogers/Winslow try to get out of their current contracts, or hold out demanding a trade, Owners will get some of the money back they paid in signing bonuses.

We can't imagine the Browns new front office taking any action on this. They wont release him. Rogers was obviously the most talented player on the defensive side of the ball last year. And we don't think the Browns want to set the precedent of re-negotiating with disgruntled players. As we all know, Disgruntled Browns players are a dime a dozen these days.

Goldhammer Calls Randy Lerner a 'Weirdo'

So, do you want to know what is wrong with the Browns? WKNR's Aaron Goldhammer will tell you...

"Randy Lerner is a Weirdo."

On WKNR's Saturday Morning sports show, Hammer said that the Browns will never be successful with a "Weirdo as an Owner."

With that said, there is part of me that wants to rip on Hammer for that comment and say: Solid, detailed analysis Aaron. Would you also classify Butch Davis as a 'Jerk,' Romeo Crennel as a 'Wimp,' and Tim Couch as a 'Baby?'

However, there is another part of me that says, as simple, and juvenile a comment as that sounds initially, it is also a pretty accurate depiction. There are certainly plenty of things weird about this guy, and weird about his team. This whole last season was flat-out weird...and it starts at the top - weirdo. Good point Hammer...the Browns do need a less weird owner.

Browns Fire Mangini for Gruden!

If there was ever an organization in professional sports that would fire a coach, hire a new coach in the offseason, and then fire that new coach, for another coach, before the previously hired coach ever actually coached a game, it would be Randy Lerner's Cleveland Browns.


Unfortunately for the sake of comedy, the Browns actually did not fire Mangenius...yet.

But, with Jon Gruden walking the streets, should they? I'll rephrase...is Gruden a better fit for this team than Mangini? Interesting debate if you ask me...the career stats are as follows:

Jon Gruden: (4) Seasons with the Raiders (40 - 28) record; (7) Seasons with the Buccanners (60 - 57) record for a career mark of (100-85) which includes (5) Post Season Appearances and (1) Super Bowl Title

Eric Mangini: (3) Seasons with the Jets (23-25) record; (1) Post Season Appearance

A couple other footnotes...Gruden has deep Ohio ties...born in Sandusky, he played college football at the University of Dayton as a back-up QB. He is an in your face coach that would probably not put up with all that much of the Braylon Edwards type garbage that surrounded the team all season. Maybe Mangini won't either, who knows. What else is interesting is that when Gruden went from his first job to his second, the Buccs traded first round draft picks to get Gruden...Mangini on the other hand got fired after (3) years of service...on the flip side of the firing coin, it took Jon Gruden (11) years to get fired from his first NFL gig and it took Mangini (3) years.

2009 Browns Head Coach Candidates

The Soap Opera that is your 2008 Cleveland Browns has gotten Shaver Sports thinking….when Romeo Crennel gets fired next year, which TV/Movie Character would best replace him?

In answering our own question, Shaver Sports' Top Ten List of Character Candidates best suited to be the next Head Coach of our Beloved Cleveland Browns is as follows:


10.) Coach Herman Boone, i.e. Denzel Washington. Remember the Titans. Remember when the Browns were competitive? I don’t. He brought a racially divided school together. Maybe he could bring Kellen Winslow and Phil Savage together.

9.)Tony Micelli, from Who’s the Boss. You wouldn’t even need to ask that question with Tony Danza in charge.

8.)Mickey Goldmill, from Rocky. Would drastically improve team speed, with his Greased Lightning training camps. Shaun Rogers would easily shed a needed 40 lbs chasing a chicken around Berea.

7.)Michael Rogers, Resident Advisor in Saved by the Bell, The College Years, played by Cleveland’s own Bob Golic. Main value to Berea: Tough Love. While a strict figure of authority to Screech, Zak, AC Slater, and Kelly, Mr. Rogers was able to find a place in his heart for a helpless little laboratory mouse. (Would be ranked higher but when he went out of town, Zak threw a rave in the dorm. The last thing Berea needs is glow sticks and some E going around the locker room)

6.)Bud Kilmer, Varsity Blues. (Jon Voight) I know. I hear you. You’re saying, but he was shamed into walking off the field at the end of the movie by Mox and the rest of the Coyotes. But Kilmer won 31 Division titles. This team needs a Head Coach with a track record as a winner. Not a track record of riding someone else’s coattails as a Coordinator.

5.)Tony D’Amato, aka Al Pacino, from Any Given Sunday. Best coaching attribute is Personality Management. Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards are the real life versions of Willie Beamen (played by Jamie Foxx) and Julian Washington (played by LL Cool J). The Clowns even have their own version of the tired, washed up, 3 steps too slow, linebacker Shark Lavay (played by LT) – Andra Davis. The similarities are eerie.

4.)Jack Bauer, from 24. Highly skilled under pressure and at clock management. Would actually implement a 2 Minute Drill. Something the previous coach was unable to do.

3.)Detective John Kimble, played by The Governator. Most people would think that Arnold as “The Terminator” or as “Dutch” from Predator would be a better pick. But did you see the way he got those rug rats into shape Kindergarten Cop? As Romeo says “Kids will be kids”. And these kids need some discipline.

2.)Norm Peterson, (George Wendt) from Cheers. Fans wouldn’t have to bother to email him and risk an expletive laced reply, they’d know where to find him after a game. That, and he would save the Browns some money. They already have the size 62/30 pants from the previous regime.

1.)Vic Mackey, from The Shield. He makes #4 Jack Bauer look like a choir boy. Think his players would quit on him? Not a chance. Running around after practice without their shoes on? Please. Tom Coughlin thinks Vic Mackey is uptight. Question his play calling? You would hope the worst thing that happens to you is that you are benched.

Browns vs. Bills: Who Do the Experts Got?

Vegas has the Browns as 5.5 point underdogs. The weather in Buffalo is supposed to be cold, windy and sloppy. The Browns have been a "Pass to set up the Run" offense. The "Real" Browns Defense has finally shown up and given up 2 TD leads in the second half back to back games....
All signs point to the Brownies losing. However in a season where all logic is lost, who knows what will happen tonight.

On ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike in the Morning, Cleveland Native Mike Golic picked the Browns to cover the spread tonight. Golic feels that fellow ND alum, Brady Quinn will play 'good enough' for the Browns to win. Equally as surprising was Co-Host Mike Greenberg's feelings on the game tonight. He just doesnt like the Browns to cover, he likes the Browns to pull the upset. Not that beating the 5-4 Buffalo Bills is considered "Shocking the World" or anything...

Watch for the Browns Defense to show a few different looks as well as some more personnel rotating in tonight in Buffalo. Wimbley will be moved around, Shante Orr will see more playing time to hopefully limit Marshawn Lynch, and Brandon McDonald will see some much deserved time on the pine.

Quinn will see quite a few different looks tonight too. Watch for heavy blitzing, and the Roving D, or UFO Defense that the Browns have used a few times, to try and confuse Quinn.

As Browns fans, I know we hate the Steelers - but I think we should hate the Ravens more. Below are 10 Reasons to boo the birds from Baltimore:

3. Ray Lewis is on the team.
4. Ray Lewis does that stupid dance still.
5. Baltimore Raven fans have existed as long as Diamondback Fans

7. They used to be the Cleveland Browns
8. Brian Billick...even though he got fired.

Say it Ain't So Joe.....

The Browns overall are getting and staying healthy. DA has seemingly shaken off all the cobwebs from his preseason concussion, Tucker getting back in there will help the O-Line, and Shaun Smith coming back soon will be able to give Shaun Rogers more of a chance to catch his breath. But the one guy NOT coming back that really would've helped this squad tremendously is Cleveland's own, Joe Jurevicious. Could you imagine if the Browns were able to get a healthy Edwards, Stallworth, Jurevicious and Winslow on the field at the same time?

Jurevicious led the Browns in receptions for 1st Downs last year and was 2nd in the NFL. His 50 catches for 600+ yards was good for 3rd on the team. So far, the Browns closest option to a Clutch Receiver has been Steve Heiden, who for some reason has been in Chud's doghouse. If this team is going to make a run this year, they need to find their Go-To Guy on 3rd Down quickly. With the 3 of the next 4 games at home, the Browns are in a prime position to make that run.

Phil, You're Costing My Team Points

You are killing my Fantasy Team.

You give my Tight End Staph Infection, then you suspend him for it. All the while, my Fantasy Team has gone from the Browns' bye week until now with Anthony Fasano, who I picked up because Nate Zegura told me too. I have now gone (3) weeks in a row with Anthony "I caught 3 balls for 4 yards in 3 weeks" Fasano. Oh I could have played him Sunday? Sorry I didnt know because he was Questionable until Friday, and I was hearing some CRAZY rumors about him on the internet so I scratched him. Not to mention the fact that Winslow did sit for the only week of offense the Browns have had all year due to an undis- Staph Infection. Thank you Phil.

If you really wanted to suspend someone suspend your QB for being awful. DEREK ANDERSON IS THE 32nd RANKED QB in the NFL ACCORDING TO HIS PASSER RATING OF 62.9. And if you don't want to suspend DA for being awful, suspend your Coach for not benching him. DA's Passer Rating is better than Matt Hasselbeck, and Tyler Thigpen - THAT'S IT. I don't care if you back up quaterback is Jesse Palmer - PUT HIM IN!

But Actually, your QB is not Jesse Palmer, he is actually a guy you traded a 1st Round Pick to get. You told us Brady Quinn was good and the numbers say DA is not. Put in Brady. And if you don't want to put him in because of that, put him in because I spent my last pick of my Fantasy Draft on Quinn thinking he would be starting by now. Because then, if Quinn started, maybe Braylon Edwards the guy I picked 3rd overall, might start scoring me the type of points he was supposed too.

Wright On Primetime

Eric Wright was on the Really Big Show, ESPN 850 WKNR, today and he discussed the Browns win on Monday, the pick six he took to the house, as well as the off season tutelage he received from Deion Sanders, and his continued relationship with Primetime.

"I texted Deion [Sanders] before the game yesterday and told him to get the balloons out, and get ready for my coming out party...my last interception I gave back to them [E.Wright fumbled his int. vs Cinci during the return] and I vowed at that point that my next int I would take to the house."

And that's exactly where he took it. It was awesome. Wright went on to talk about the fact that he worked with Sanders in the off season and stays in touch with him regularly.

Beyond teaching Eric some of the finer points of the craft, it is also obvious that Deion taught him the finer points of the Primetime Shuffle. And that thing was sweet when Wright broke it out last night. In my opinion, that was the best celebration any Brown has done in the endzone in the last 10 years, hands down.

Monday Night in Cleveland

Like a Battered Wife on Cops...I am glad we stayed together thru all of the abuse. Even if it was only one night, what a night it was!

I have to admit, I was predicting a blood-bath. I thought it was all over. I thought the Browns would be loosing by (5) TDs at half time, and Romeo was going to get fired on the spot - like when he got interviewed by Michelle Tafoya, Phil Savage was going to tap him on the shoulder. I thought Brady would start the second half. I thought DA was punch drunk and finished. I was wrong. The crow tastes terrific.

As a Football Fan it doesn't get much better than last night. Sixty Degree Weather. Seventy Yard Bombs. Pick Sixes punctuated with a Primetime Shuffle. Monday Night Football. Routing the Super Bowl Champs at Home. Believing again, if just for a night, that we could be on top one day.

To all the fans down there last night, at the muni-lot, in the stands by the lake, and to all the players on the field, good game last night Cleveland. Good game.

Browns Have More Problems Than Politics

Romeo Crennel doesn't want politics to enter the Browns' locker room, and cause division amongst the players. He really means it, his quote is all over the net, here on FANHOUSE, and Mike and Mike discussed it this morning...Romeo's stance is pretty clear.

I first have to say that I agree with Romeo Crennel on the general principle that a team should not allow politics to divide a locker room. With that out of the way, I then have to laugh at the idea that Crennel is making the assumption that, said locker room, is somehow UNIFIED, politics withstanding. The assumption that the Browns were all on the same page at one point, and then these politics, came in and divided them, is hilarious really.

Don't worry about the fact that Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn were at the McCain rally, and that Willie McGinest is supporting Obama. Worry about the fact that you are 1-3 AND COREY WILLIAMS is TALKING SMACK to the GIANTS! Worry about the fact that your team is split down party lines on who should be your QB. Worry about the fact that it does not appear as if Braylon Edwards supports DA. Worry about the fact that it looks like Kellen mouthed the words 'get ready' to Brady Quinn after a DA interception against Cincy. Worry about the fact that if you don't figure out what plays you want to run, who you want to run them, or when you want to call timeout, because if you dont, then you wont have a locker room in the midst of political turmoil that you will be forced to manage...because you wont have a team to coach.

Adams and Edwards Exemplify Browns Problems

Mike Adams has a real attitude problem. Mike had an interception yesterday. He picked off a QB from Harvard...maybe one of the worst QB's to start for any team during the last 3 NFL seasons. That is not what bothers me about Mike. What bothers me about Adams is during the game I was starting to think, I dont mind this Mike Adams guy. And then I read his quote in Tony Grossi's article today:

"If Palmer was in there, we would have gotten after him as much as we went after Fitzpatrick," Adams said. "Actually, I was looking forward [to Palmer playing]. I was looking for two picks and I only got one. I needed Carson Palmer."

Mike. Mr. Adams. What on earth is your problem? In the world of NFL players, you are not even a starter. As a reminder, you are on the field because of injuries. The Bengals are an awful NFL team, and Fitz threw up an equally awful ball that you happened to catch. Just be quiet Mike, and at the end of they year, you will have an int next to your name on the stat sheet, and people will forget who you picked off a QB that used to battle the Penn Quakers. But you dont do that, do you Mike? Instead, you decide to call out a Pro Bowler. How is that going to play for you next year when Sean Jones is healthy, you get cut, and then join someone's practice squad? Even Damon Jones doesn't think you should have said that.

Braylon Edwards is another story. He does not have 100 yards yet on the season - total. He now has (1) TD. Yesterday, the Bengals Defensive Backfield was striken with injuries. Braylon had 26 yards receiving. And when he got into the endzone, he felt it necessary to play air guitar. Your team was losing 6-3 to the worst team in the NFL at halftime. You caught a 4 yard TD pass, and then played Air Guitar. Did you really do that Bray?

This is the attitude of the 2008 Browns. Thats why we're 1-3, and awful to watch.

Hey Chud: Dial Up a Running Play

Since the teams return in 1999 two glaring weaknesses have been the lack of a rushing attack, and the inability to stop the run. Jamal Lewis didnt even get the ball last week I dont believe, and if the Browns want to get into the win column today, they need to do both in Cincy - regardless of who takes the snaps from center.

Currently, the Browns are 30th in rushing yards per game at 72.3 yds per game. I think I counted 9 teams averaging 150+ yds per game.

That got me wondering, when was the last season that the Browns ended the season averaging 150+ rushing yds per game? Take a guess.

By the way, if you guessed "during the Mack and Byner seasons?"... wrong.

Try 30 years ago. 1978 with Mike Pruitt, Greg Pruitt, Calvin Hill and Cleo Miller the team averaged 155.5 yds per game rushing.

In 1977 the average was 157.1 with Pruitt, Pruitt, Cleo and Larry Poole... and in 1976 this same foursome averaged 163.9.

The Browns broke 150+ 5 straight seasons from '63 - '67. In 1963, the Jim Brown averaged over 133+ himself.

Rumored Altercation Examplifies Leadership Void

Rizzo talked about a rumored fight in the Browns locker room last week. The rumor has been all over message boards. The funniest thread I read about the fight was on the Cleveland Fan message boards: reportedly DA tossed Braylon a sub, he dropped it, and a fight ensued. I can see that happening. What I heard from someone, that is a friend of a friend of Eric Steinbach's, was that Braylon Edwards was complaining, and running his mouth in the locker room, about whatever it is Braylon complains about, and Willie McGinest took offense to it, a physical altercation ensued to some degree.

Whether the details of this skirmish are accurate or not doesn't really matter. The Browns certainly look like their fighting, look like they are going in (52) different directions, and look like they have no 'on field leadership' on either side of the ball. Now maybe Willie McGinest was this 10 years ago, but he isnt anymore, and maybe Jamal Lewis was 6 years ago, but he doesn't even get the ball anymore.

What all of the good teams have that undoubted leader - and it is obvious for all to see. Ray Lewis is in charge of the Ravens Defense. Peyton Manning is in charge of the Colts Offense. Michael Strahan was in charge of the Giants Defense last year. Tom Brady ran the Patriots Offense.

Who is in charge of the Browns? Andra Davis? Kellen Winslow? Braylon Edwards? Willie McGinest? Ken Dorsey? Paul Zastidul?

Whoever it is, its not obvious, and thats not a good thing. And with no leadership, in-fighting ensues, and losses occurrs, over, and over, and over again, year after year, after year.

Betting Line Moves As Money Goes On Cleveland

When the betting line for this game opened, the Ravens were giving the Browns 2 points. Money going the Brown's ways has moved the line up a half point on Saturday, and then another half point on Sunday. Currently, the Ravens are giving 2.5 point to the Browns today before kickoff. Click Yahoo Spots here for the Browns line as well as all other NFL betting lines. This is a good sign if you are a Browns fan, it means the money is being bet on the Browns so much to move the line one whole point in Cleveland's favor.

The consensus around Cleveland is that the Browns should make short work of the Ravens today, and get into the win column, avoiding and 0-3 start that no team has gone on to make the playoffs from. I hope they do, but it will be a real test for Cleveland on both sides of the ball.

The Browns Defense has a real opportunity here to pin their ears back and go after to the Ravens QB Joe Flacco. Flacco is a rookie, and he is not mobile. Hopefully the Browns secondary can keep Flacco confused long enough to allow Big Baby and company to make Sunday a long afternoon for Flacco.

I am especially watching Shaun Big Baby Rogers to see if he is going to be a guy that shows up when the bright lights of the national spotlight are off. He didnt show me much in week 1, and seemed to show up on Sunday Night Football last week. Hopefully he shows up against Baltimore to god knows we need him too.

I will also be watching the Eye in the Offensive Sky, Chud, to see if he can re-capture the magic he seemed to be able to orchestrate week after week last season. Either teams have figured the Mad Scientisct from The U out after a season of suprises, or he has run into a couple of rough outings, looking to rebound agains a Defense that was good eight years ago. An opportunity awaits for the Browns Offense today as well.

One note I noticed this morning is that Braylon is questionable for today's game, and as of now, I dont know what impact that has had, if any, on the latest line.

And for me, more than the Steelers, I want to PUNISH the Ravens...I still havent forgot that it was you that packed up and left in the middle of the night...Here we go BROWNIES, HERE WE GO!!

Eric Deetz, Afternoon Drive on Fox: Expect Brady Quinn Soon

The Browns are a ship heading straight for an iceberg, and they need to get re-directed. Its not all DA's fault, its not all Romeo's fault, its not all the injuries fault, its a combination of everything. But regardless of who's fault it is for this 0-2 start, the fact remains abundantly clear, that the Cleveland Browns need a shot in the arm, and they need it fast.
